Relationships have 3 major components that need to be evaluated and play a major role in the success of such relationships. You have to consider your mate as #1 The person #2 The friend #3 The lover.
The analysis of the person includes who they are... how good of a mother/father they are, their spiritual/religious beliefs, their code, their character. The analysis of the friend includes how they treat you and others, their level of selflessness, their commitment strength, and 'loyalty' beyond bond status. The analysis of the lover includes their relationship maturity, romance, role knowledge, and ability to love/be loved.
You HAVE to know what is most important to you in order to land the best candidate. Example: Good Man/Woman, Great Friend, and Terrible Lover could be one person's dream, yet another person's nightmare. If you remove yourself from individualizing characteristics desired, and fill buckets categorically, you will improve your selections and potentially improve your relationship(s), via realistic expectations.
